5 THINGS NOAH DILLON LEARNT WHILST CREATING HIS DEBUT ALBUM 'KILL THE DOVE'

Watch our interview with Noah Dillon!

Perth indie-rock artist Noah Dillon has unveiled his long-awaited debut album, Kill The Dove. To celebrate the release, the musician has shared with MILKY five things he learnt whilst creating the record.

“It’s a bit of a coming of age record,” says Dillon of the record, “I was figuring out who I am while writing the record. Having a real clear vision of what I wanted to do with my life, and then having two and a half years not being able to travel was a minefield to get around. I’ve never been good at staying still. I’ve always been moving, still’s never been good for me, so the last three years have been such a learning curve. When I go back to this record I’ll be able to hear where I was and how far I’ve come”

Having kicked off in Fremantle last week, the run of shows will continue tonight, starting in Newcastle before heading to Sydney, Wollongong, Hobart, Canberra, Melbourne, Geelong, Byron Bay, Adelaide and Perth, wrapping up in Margaret River on September 17. Asha Jefferies and Smol Fish are set to support the musician on all dates from Newcastle onwards. Tickets are on sale now!

DON’T TOUR IN-BETWEEN EVERY RECORDING SESSION GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK!

Whilst we recorded this album we were flying out every Thursday and coming back every Sunday night then hoping straight into the studio on Monday - Thursday. Although this was such an amazing time and we were having so much fun it was pretty exhausting and its so necessary to give yourself time to rest and feel 100% for recording. It’s also a battle to be playing the old set and then coming in and recording new songs, I have pretty singular focus and like to feel fully consumed by the song I’m creating.

START EARLY AND FINNISH EARLY

Everyone has a different way to work that is best for them. Our producer Andy is always keen to do a 9-5 recording day. It’s easy in the creative world to not know when to stop and end up working late into the night, I really like letting this happen when I’m writing and doing the creative stuff on my own. I think when your working with a team and collaborating on ideas its really helpful to do it when everyone is awake and caffeinated. Eat, sleep, record, rest!

DON’T GET STUCK ON THE DEMO!

I had recorded all the songs in a lofi demo way before we recorded them. These are so good for representing the vibe you want to produce from the song and having a lot of parts to choose from. In saying this I found that we had to consistently make the call to not get stuck on the demo ideas and not be restricted to the creative energy in the studio. Knowing when to let the present creative flow of the studio take hold and when to circle back to the original idea is hard but I think its always best to throw the kitchen sink at it and if it doesn’t work you’ve always got the demo to fall back on.

LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN

It can be a lot of people management, everyone is having ideas and its hard to be the one dictating which ones are used. I found that truly listening and understanding what everyone wants and then making an executive call on what I think will be the best (usually a mixture of all ideas) is the calmest and most productive way to go. It’s easy to feel like you just want to grab the wheel and do it exactly how you think it should go but you will miss the gold from your other band members minds and I always think 5 minds are better than 1 if everyone can listen.

ALWAYS BRING SNACKS

Nothing makes me more hungry than trying to play guitar in time or sing in key haha. Im a sucker for red rock deli chilli chips, if I could get them to sponsor us in the studio I might make the best
