Maitland’s Just A Gent has dropped his long awaited new album, Planet Oasis! To celebrate the release, the acclaimed producer and DJ has shared with MILKY five things he must have in every studio session.

“Planet Oasis, the dream utopia. A brand new show, a brand new vision and a newfound love for artistry and the power it can possess. Years in the making, Planet Oasis is a collection of sounds that pushes the boundaries of sonics to create an undefinable experience that will leave you questioning what is possible and what we can achieve.” Just A Gent shares.

“I put everything I have into this record. I collaborated with my favourite creatives to bring it together. I hope it inspires you to do more and I hope that together we can build an even better world for the next generations. An oasis, Planet Oasis.”

To mark the release, Just A Gent is hitting the road! Kicking off at Manning Bar in Sydney on June 24, the tour will continue on to Newcastle and Brisbane, before wrapping up at Howler in Melbourne on July 2. are on sale now! Tickets are on sale now.

INSPIRATION

I always need to find a source of inspiration, whether it be an idea I’ve already cooked up in the past, a sample, some visual I just watched and imagined a score/sound too, or even just after being at a gig watching other talent do their thing.

DRINK (COFFEE, WATER, TEA, PEPSI MAX)

A must have studio essential for me is a drink next to me; taking a sip is always a nice little refresher and that little moment is sometimes all it takes to reset my mind. Also getting up and stretching / or going into a different space to make a coffee or have a drink etc is a huge help too.

FL STUDIO

For me, I feel incomplete without FL by my side. It’s the holy grail of production tools and I’ve used it for over 12 years now. I still like to write demos just on a piano or beatbox etc but it's not until I jump inside of FL I can really bring it to life. My favourite plugin for sounds in FL is Harmor and my favourite effect tool is fruity delay 3

MIDI KEYBOARD / SOMETHING TO PLAY WITH (LAUNCHPAD, SYNTH, CONTROLLER)

At my roots, I am a piano roll / mouse and keyboard producer, but there’s something about smacking pads, twisting knobs and playing the keys that gives you an extra sense of euphoria and attachment when making a track. I always play around with my gear before I get too deep into the computer production side of things, way more fun, period!

THE MINDSET

A lot of my friends and people I have watched make beats in the past seem to be trying to make hits or make a certain thing before going into a session. For me this is not the case, if I have an idea, sure I'll put that down first, but that just gets me started. It’s all about going with the flow, if it sounds good, it sounds good. I let the songs write themselves, as soon as I get another idea, I throw it down, I don’t question it. There isn’t time for doubt when you’re making tunes. Forget genres, they don’t exist, it’s just more labels that people wanna throw onto things. Let the music take you there, don’t conform just because it’s trending right now.

Make shit for you, let creation be the outlet for your soul and soak in every moment of it.
