British-Ghanian artist, Nectar Woodes has unveiled her new EP, it’s like i never left. To celebrate, the singer has shared with MILKY five artists that inspired her whilst making the collection of songs.
DONNY HATHAWAY
The most warm and honestly music there is, it transports me back to the 70’s. His lyrics are really deep and meaningful and get my heart strings every time
LAURYN HILL
Her MTV unplugged is on constant repeat. Her playing so open and raw, it’s really influenced “when the rain stops”, her performances are so personal too. She’s been a huge inspiration since I began pairing honest lyrics with jazz chords, love her!
MICHEAL KIWANUKA
He is so good at driving emotion that can at times be uneasy. Only Happy especially when we were finishing it drew heavily on that feeling. He is so amazing at portraying emotion through his composition, all the while keeping it soulful and warm. This is something I’ve tried to put forward with this EP.
PAT THOMAS AND THE KWASHIBU AREA BAND
I grew listening to him with my Dad, he’s like the Ghana version of Elton John. When I went back it was so amazing to see how much he still influences what’s coming out of Ghana today. Especially the rhythm's and the groove of his music heavily inspired my writing for this project.
SAULT
I’ve always loved how carefree their music is. They are no boundaries, they are constantly pushing forward. When approaching session in Ghana, writing songs Lose and Light As A Feather I really tried to do the same, I got to just let go and give in to the process.
it’s like i never left is out now!
