Naarm/Melbourne based producer and vocalist Kate Durman has unveiled her new musical project, Purient. The musician has released her new single Memories, set to appear on her debut EP of the same name. The release is accompanied by an official visual, directed by Jamie Timony and filmed at Victoria's Royal Botanic Gardens.
Laden with oscillating synths, breathless vocals and clanging percussion, the EBM heavy composition builds with intensity ever so slightly, counting down the moments before a shriek pounds the acid house alarm. The songs music video juxtaposes its heavy, industrial textures with scenes of vibrant, lush greenery.
Of the release Durman shares: "I wrote Memories in early 2018 with the intention of producing a club track that DJs could tool and have fun with. Lyrically, the song speaks to the concept of being attached to an idea that you once had of someone."
Durman subverts traditional pop forms to deliver an introverted, brooding and purposeful sound, delicately complemented by gauzy vocals. Traversing her own thoughts with uncanny attention to detail, her visceral productions are reminiscent of Kelly Lee Owens’ reptiously meditative melodies, Smerz’s concentrated chaos and the subtle trance of Daniel Avery.
