American rapper, producer and singer J57 - who has collaborated with Wu-Tang Clan, Joey Bada$$, Sid Wilson of Slipknot, Tuka of Thundamentals and many more - has shared his new album THE HYPHENATE: DISC 1, out now via his label FiveSe7en Collective.
It’s a showcase of the indie-meets-hip-hop sound he's been honing for over a decade, and to celebrate he’s put together a list of his favourite artists based in Australia who aren’t afraid to genre blend and push the boundaries of “traditional” hip-hop.
“I think it’s important for artists to keep pushing the envelope musically and by blurring the lines between genres, we do just that. My entire album THE HYPHENATE: DISC 1 is an attempt to create a sub-genre that I wished already existed, so I did it myself.” the rapper says of the release.
TUKA - NIRVANA
Tuka is an absolutely genius musician. He's my friend and I was honored to have produced the title-track of his album "L.D.T.E" but I have to say, "Nirvana" is one of those songs that I wished I made; from the song writing to the production, the whole thing. I have to give props where they're due. Tuka flawlessly blends hiphop with alternative and baroque pop. Incredible.
BAKER BOY - WISH YOU WELL FT. BERNARD FANNING
This feel-good banger was my introduction to Baker Boy. I heard it while at the gym and got hooked immediately. The fun, soulful vibe of the production and chorus create a beautiful earworm while Baker Boy's various catchy flow patterns and vocal inflections keep my attention from beginning to end.
THE KID LAROI - BLESSINGS
Once in a long while my younger cousin Luke will send me a new artist to check out and The Kid LAROI was the first one he's ever sent me. That was this song back in 2019. I immediately loved his original rap-sing style that meshes amazingly well with the lush pop-trap backdrop. The style has evolved drastically since that era but back in 2019 he brought a very unique approach to this style of genre-bending hiphop. Luke was early on LAROI - good call, cuz!
THUNDAMENTALS - SOMETHING I SAID FT. THOM CRAWFORD
This song is such a perfect blend of trueschool, traditional hiphop and catchy (good) pop music, that I have to put it on the list. This song turned 10 this year and I still listen to it all the time. No lie. The cross-over-y beat is perfect. Thom Crawford's eerie yet soulful pop vocals are perfect. Tuka & Jeswon's memorable rap verses are perfect. One of my favorite songs ever.
MISS KANINNA - BLAK BRITNEY
I think Miss Kaninna is very original, envelope pushing & dope. Those are 3 qualities that I find in all of my favorite artists. Miss Kaninna demonstrates something that people don't speak about; rappers leaving (tasteful) space in the song/leaving space to let the beat breathe in certain spots which makes the listener hang on every word. This song is a jam and I dig how Miss Kaninna makes this style look easy - when I know it's not. Real dope!
