Atlanta, Georgia singer-songwriter Jillian Loux has shared her new single, White Lillies. To celebrate the release, the singer has curated an exclusive playlist for MILKY full of songs that shaped her and influenced her sound.
“White Lilies to me is kind of a classy diss track" Loux says of her debut single. “The song mentions various observations I've made about a particular friendship in my life and I'm basically coming to terms with the fact that the relationship is a bit toxic and it may be time to let it go. All love at the end of the day, but self love has to come first, which sometimes means cutting off people that hurt you more than benefit you.”
AMY WINEHOUSE - BACK TO BLACK
Amy's music has always moved me. Her music is so soulful and enticing. For me it's always those darker and rich melodies like in Back to black, that draw me into a song. I love making music like that.
FRANK OCEAN - SWIM GOOD
This song had a chokehold on me in 2022. I love Frank's music because it's usually very low key but you can still feel what he's singing. His lyrics are cool yet thought provoking. Iv found myself very fond of that narrative style and have definitely tried to pull from it in my music. With that said his melodies are also so catchy and different as well.
YEBBA - OCTOBER SKY
I'm kind of obsessed with Yebba’s music. Her voice is out of this world but also her melodies are effortlessly beautiful and soulful in a way. I think I definitely draw on her when I'm writing songs, especially in harmonic ways when touching on background vocals. In October sky her background vocals feel like they are guiding you in a way which I love.
SABRINA CLAUDIO - PROBLEM WITH YOU
I started listening to Sabrina Claudio a lot in my freshman year of high school. Problem With You is so vulnerable and authentic it's hard not to be moved by it. But then her rhythmic melodies in the song make me want to listen to it on repeat. I think I've definitely drawn from her wispy vocals and rhythmic sultry melodies.
MS LAURYN HILL - EX-FACTOR
I have gotten really into 90’s music these past few years. This song in particular never fails to make me lose my mind. Every time I hear “ when I try to walk away, you hurt yourself to make me stay. This is crazy,” I go feral. The lyrics are so real, and you can hear it in her voice. And then the bridge comes in, and you can't help but fully immerse yourself in the song. I love music like that. I want to make music like that.
SANTANA - MARIA MARIA
Another 90s hit that makes me lose my mind is Maria Maria. I am always drawn to songs with Spanish guitar without question. Another reason I love it is because of the different styles incorporated in the songs. Its a mix of pop, R&B, and hip hop, with Latin American influence. Im so inspired by music like this.
ADELE - SET FIRE TO THE RAIN
I feel as though I owe credit to Adele. I really grew up on her as a child. Her vocals really embodied power to me. I've never heard an Adele song where I did not believe every word she sang. I remember when I first heard Set Fire To The Rain, I was probably 8, and I ended up researching her entire repertoire, falling in love with every song. And once again, it's those dark and rich melodies that always seem to pull me in which she manipulates so beautifully in all her work.
