Lone Wolf is out now!
New Zealand street poet and rapper MELODOWNZ has shared his new album, Lone Wolf. To celebrate the release, the musician is taking MILKY through the release track by track!
LONE WOLF INTRO
This song is kinda like a statement track to start the album. The crazy thing is the last words are “I'm just tryna make the world a better place in case I have a daughter”, and I wrote this 3 years ago before my daughter was even a thought.
This song is about the toxicities and conditioning; negative impact that money has on society.
LOOT (FEATURING MAXO KREAM)
This an unapologetic banger about getting yours by any means. Also just flexing and letting people know who one of the best out of west Auckland is!
A summer anthem about the challenges I went through in a past relationship, making up
for it calling her beautiful to mask my toxic behaviour.
A nostalgic overlook about life and how people change just like the seasons. We need to look after our brothers and sisters - hoping for the best for people.
PRAY FOR MORE
I wrote this song coming from my perspective from when I was around 18 or 19. Being judged, letting family down, losing my good friends, having malice for my haters, feeling like God isn’t there when you need guidance then realising God has been there the whole time. It really teaches you empathy, resilience, courage and strength to get through your struggles and always have faith.
This song is one of my favourites off the album. I go deep and express my thoughts and insight into my mind, what I had been going through at the time. The video is a great visual interpretation of it as well.
HOW IT BE
Enlisting the retro funk flavor of 70’s Parliament-Funkadelic bassist and singer- songwriter legend Bootsy Collins. He rides the wave with his signature ad-libs and backing vocals - the funk godfather, over a bouncy grooving rhythm. I wrote this in LA so I was on more of a west coast g-funk feel good vibe.
This songs about being resilient and showing NO MERCY no matter what the situation is.
I had the games song “stainless” feat. Anderson Paak in mind when I made this. We got inspiration from Tupacs “all eyes on me” and replayed the chords and guitar. This songs theme is in essence an RnB slow jam you could roll one up and smoke too.
A song I got inspired to write while I was in a strip club, I wanted to make a song girls could get down too in an empowering respectful way. A simple synth bass and groovy drums to carry the vibe let her know “she BAD”- in a good way.
This songs about coming to the hood and showing shorty around the community and the place I grew up at. Hitting Piha to watch the sunset.
This songs about my upbringing growing up with my grandparents, losing friends over the years, facing ups and downs but through it all carrying on. This ones close to my heart because it not only features the GOAT Troy Kingi but also the AVONDALE INTERMEDIATE CHOIR.
My favourite song off the album dedicated to my late Aunty who passed away a week before my album dropped. A song of hope and comfort for those that seek guidance. Keep going.
